Programmable mixed-signal IC supports wearable power systems

The configurable mixed-signal integrated circuit (CMIC) GreenPak device is integrated and flexible, and can provide a set of features, including voltage monitoring, power sequencing, reset functions and low drop-out (LDO) regulators, that are configurable in settings and interconnect.

End users of mobile devices, especially wearable devices, want smaller and lighter devices, with longer battery life. There is also the need to reduce both cost and the size of the circuit boards, points out the company.

To overcome these challenges, the company has developed the concept of flexible power islands (FPIs). Designers can divide the complex power system into a number of local power regions, or islands, each of which includes the power control, power sequencing and power regulation needed to support loads in the immediate vicinity. According to the company, this technique results in higher performance and a more efficient solution that can be tailored to the requirements of each individual system.

Power system functions (power monitoring, sequencing, reset and power switching) are integrated into a 2.0 x 3.0mm 20-pin, fully encapsulated plastic package.

The company’s graphic user interface (GUI) -based GPAK Designer software, and GPAK development hardware, can be used to configure of the device, customising the functions to match power requirements. The SLG46580 has four LDOs, each with a maximum output current of 150mA. Each of the LDOs has a programmable output voltage level that can be set to one of 32 values from 0.9 to 4.35V, and also have programmable options for slew-rate selection and fault detection.
