PFC controller is next-gen efficient

The UCC28180 8pin PFC controller cuts power consumption in half, says the company, and delivers PFC greater than 0.95. It is designed for universal-input AC/DC applications, such as industrial, server power supplies, air-conditioners, lighting, consumer appliances and home office electronics.

Adjustable switching frequency is a feature as well as AC-input current THD (total harmonic distortion) as low as 5% with a 50% smaller shunt resistor, says the company.

The programmable frequency range is from 18 to 250kHz and allows use of IGBTs, GaN, SiC or Si MOSFETs, to reduce component count. Soft over-current, cycle-by-cycle peak current limit, output open-loop, overvoltage and open-pin detection, protect components. By allowing a faster loop response when output voltage exceeds regulation level, the incidence of audible noise is reduced in magnetic components caused by abrupt PWM output shut-off during overvoltage protection.

The controller is available in an 8pin SOIC package. An evaluation board, the UCC28180EVM-573 360-W is also available.
