TI combines current sense amplifier and comparators to save space
Offered in compact package options, the INA185 current sense amplifier and open drain TLV4021 and push-pull TLV4041 comparators enable engineers to design smaller, simpler and more integrated systems without sacrificing performance, says the company.

Pairing the amplifier with one of the comparators produces the smallest, highest performing overcurrent detection solution in the industry, claims Texas Instruments.

The INA185 current sense amplifier is in a SOT-563 package measuring 1.6 x 1.6 mm (2.5 mm2). It is at least 40% smaller than competitive leaded packages. It has a 55µV input offset for higher precision measurements at low currents. It enables the use of lower-value shunt resistors to cut system power consumption. The 350kHz bandwidth and 2V/µs slew rate enable phase-current reproduction to enhance motor efficiency and save system power.

The matched resistive gain network in the amplifier enables a maximum gain error as low as 0.2%, which contributes to robust performance over temperature and process variations. The typical response time of 2µs enables fast fault detection to prevent system damage.

The TLV4021 and TLV4041 comparators are provided in a small die-size ball-grid array (DSBGA) 0.73 x 0.73mm package. The integrated voltage reference saves board space and supports precise voltage monitoring to optimise system performance.

The comparators can monitor voltages as low as the 0.2V internal reference and feature a high threshold accuracy of 1% across a full temperature range from -40 to 125°C. Low 2.5µA quiescent current delivers extended battery life for smart, connected devices. The fast propagation delay can be as low as 450ns for systems to monitor signals and respond quickly to fault conditions.

In combination, these devices produce the smallest, highest-performing overcurrent detection solution, claims the company: 15% smaller and 50 times faster than competitive devices. In addition, pairing the amplifier with one of these comparators supports overcurrent detection on rails as high as 26V to better manage current spikes.

TINA-TI SPICE models and reference designs are available to simulate system designs and predict circuit behaviour when using the INA185 current-sense amplifier and TLV4021 and TLV4041 comparators.
