NGK raises temperature of Li-Ion rechargeable coin battery

The battery was first introduced last year, with an operating temperature range of -40 to 85°C. The company says the battery has maintained capacity and power while increased the operating temperature. In its fully charged state, i.e. when the battery is most prone to deterioration, the capacity decrease is less than 20%, says the company - even after it is kept at 105°C for 1,000 hours.

A small amount of electrolyte has been added to the all-ceramic stacked monolithic body for thermal stability. The battery is categorised as semi-solid-state battery, with performance equivalent to, or better than that of, a conventional Li-Ion rechargeable battery.

The battery can be mounted on a circuit board using reflow soldering, or mounted through injection moulding.

The EnerCera battery series is a compact, thin, high energy density lithium-ion rechargeable battery uses NGK’s crystal-oriented ceramic plate for electrodes and is offered as the EnerCera Coin and the thin EnerCera Pouch.

Sample shipments are underway, and mass production is scheduled to begin in September 2020.
