DC/DC converter focuses power density on H2 fuel cell applications

In a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), the fuel cell produces electricity to power the high-voltage batteries and run the electric motor. Fuel cells, however, do not provide a constant voltage but one which varies according to the type and number of cells and the conditions of use.

To accelerate the adoption of hydrogen in electric mobility applications, it is essential to be able to adapt fuel cell systems to existing electric architectures, without having to redevelop an entire dedicated powertrain, says the company. The DC/DC converter is  a key element of this system.

The standard high voltage to high voltage DC/DC converter interfaces with fuel cells of all levels of power. The size- and weight-optimised converter is reversible and operates in buck or boost mode. Multiple converters can be paralleled for use in higher power fuel cells.

The DCH320 has a voltage range of 50 to 900V DC and a maximum current of 320A. It has a maximum output of 200kW – converters can be configured in parallel to increase power. Auxiliary power is 9.0 to 56V and efficiency is 99%, for a step ratio of 1:2.

The DCHV320 will be available from Q1 2022.

The company announced that it is the first in a new product line that will include higher and lower current ratings, buck-boost configurations for overlapping input and output voltages ranges, and galvanic isolation option. Other versions will be released from Q2 2022.
