New high-voltage MLCC benefits EV on-board chargers
Samsung Electro-Mechanics is launching a high-performance CLLC-resonant MLCC (multi-layer ceramic capacitor) that offers 22nF at 1000V. Claimed to provide the optimal solution for the on-board chargers (OBCs) of electric vehicles, mass production of the innovative new CL32C223JIV1PN# is already underway, with samples available upon request.

Due to the electrification and high functionality of modern automobiles, the number of MLCCs mounted in a single vehicle is climbing rapidly. Trends influencing specific MLCC characteristics include ongoing requirements for miniaturisation, high voltage, stability and higher capacitance.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics is reprtedly answering these demands with the development of its new CL32C223JIV1PN#, an advanced product that comes in a compact 1210 (3.2 x 2.5mm) form factor. With its 22nF capacitance and high rated voltage of 1000V, this high-capability MLCC is ideal for the OBCs required by battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

MLCCs specified for use in BEVs and PHEVs must be of quality construction and operate at high voltages to ensure reliable charging of the traction battery by the OBC. The OBC converts AC to DC (adjusting DC output accordingly to suit the specific battery), while also providing power factor correction (PFC) for shaping the input current to the power supply. Ceramic MLCCs (rather than plastic film capacitors) are the preferred choice for distributed capacitance because of their ability to withstand high temperatures.
