Microcontrollers are optimised for rechargeable NiMH use
The ML620130 family is optimised for compact industrial equipment requiring battery drive in noisy environments, says the company, which is part of the Rohm Group.

In addition to clearing the ±30kV noise measurement limit, operating voltage has been reduced to 1.6V. Optimising the operating voltage to an integral multiple of standard nickel metal hydride batteries (NiMH, 0.8V× 2=1.6V) ensures efficient use without wasting battery charge. This contributes to decreased battery consumption to prolong battery life in portables and battery-equipped industrial equipment.

There are nine models offered in a variety of memory capacities and pin counts.

To meet miniaturisation and lower costs, many applications choose to eliminate noise and/or thermal counter measures. However, this makes it difficult to balance environmental resistance and maintain safety using fewer external parts. Reducing the size of the battery mounted in the module while increasing battery life requires power consumption (voltage and current) be optimised for each application.

Decreasing the minimum operating voltage to 1.6V extends the supply voltage detection range down to 1.63V (typical). This is very close to the voltage of two nickel metal hydride batteries (0.8V×2=1.6V), reducing the number of charge cycles and memory effects while prolonging battery life, says the company.

Peripheral clock operations of 16MHz CPU and 32MHz (PWM) increase performance by a factor of two, over the company’s standard lineup of ‘tough’ microcontrollers. Operating current is reduced by more than 25%, compared to typical published values.

An on-chip RC-type oscillator is built in (±1% at -20 to ±85°C, ±1.5% at -40 to 105°C). UART communication (asynchronous method) is enabled throughout the temperature range without an external oscillator. Both full-duplex (one channel) and half-duplex (two channel) modes are allowed. In the event that bidirectional communication is not required at the same time the two receiving terminals and two transmission terminals can be flexibly assigned, making it possible to mount on smaller boards.

High noise immunity makes it possible to clear the ±30kV Level 4 measurement limit (air discharge: ±15kV) of the IEC61000-4-2 standard (electrostatic immunity testing standard). Circuit enhancements related to power lines and noise intrusion pathways result in a 30% improvement in noise resistance, says the company, which is verified via indirect discharge using the company’s reference board under specific conditions.

The microcontrollers are available now for use in sensor modules, battery charge control, compact electric tools, portables and industrial equipment.
